The lake was built in 1362 AD by Pichhu Banjara at the time when city was ruled by Maharana Lakha. The dimensions of the lake are as such, it is 3 miles in length, 2 miles in width and is 30 feet deep. The lake was enlarged and also a dam was built on the shores of the lake after Maharana Udai Singh was mesmerized by the beauty of the lake. The lake is surrounded by beautiful monuments like City Palace of Udaipur which is located on its eastern banks, Mohan Mandir on north-eastern side, the renowned Lake Palace is situated in the middle and Jag Mandir is located on Jag Island.

There exists different type of structures in the surrounding areas of Lake Pichola which includes marble temples, bathing ghats, palaces, chabutaras (a raised platform which consists of a courtyard within it) and family mansions. There are several places which are prominent places of tourist attraction, some of those are Lake Palace which is located in the middle of the lake and has now been converted into a heritage hotel, Jag Mandir which is located on the Jag Island, Mohan Mandir which is located on the north-east corner of the lake, Bansi Ghat which is the origin for several boats which further move towards different parts of the lake, the Arsi Vilas Island and the everlasting Sitamata Wildlife Sanctuary which is located on the western shore of the lake.

Jag Mandir Palace which is located in the lake premises has an incident attached to its history. It was in the year 1623 when Prince Khurram sought refuge of the Mewar King Maharana Karan Singh II, he was allowed to stay in the partially completed palace during the time of his rebellion against Jahangir. Later, the title of Shah Jahan was taken by Prince Khuraam while seizing the Mughal Empire.
