The lake was built in 1362 AD by Pichhu Banjara at the time when city was ruled by Maharana Lakha. The dimensions of the lake are as such, it is 3 miles in length, 2 miles in width and is 30 feet deep. The lake was enlarged and also a dam was built on the shores of the lake after Maharana Udai Singh was mesmerized by the beauty of the lake. The lake is surrounded by beautiful monuments like City Palace of Udaipur which is located on its eastern banks, Mohan Mandir on north-eastern side, the renowned Lake Palace is situated in the middle and Jag Mandir is located on Jag Island.
There exists different type of structures in the surrounding areas of Lake Pichola which includes marble temples, bathing ghats, palaces, chabutaras (a raised platform which consists of a courtyard within it) and family mansions. It was in the year 1623 when Prince Khurram sought refuge of the Mewar King Maharana Karan Singh II, he was allowed to stay in the partially completed palace during the time of his rebellion against Jahangir. Later, the title of Shah Jahan was taken by Prince Khuraam while seizing the Mughal Empire.
