The city is surrounded by the Aravalli Ranges which separates it from the mighty Thar Desert. The presence of a sophisticated lake system in the city justifies its title of “City of Lakes”. There are several places to visit in the city which include palaces, museums, architectural temples and not to miss the culturally enriched traditional fairs.

History of Udaipur

The city of Udaipur was founded in the year 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II. The city was founded on the banks of Banas river in the Girwa valley which was in the southwest direction to Nagda and was considered to be a fertile area. The newly founded city was declared as the capital of the Mewar kingdom at that time. From the 10th to 12th century, a town named Ayad which was an important city for trading was the capital of the Kingdom. The Girwa region was a prominent place in the earlier times and was occupied by Chittaud rulers at the time when the dangerous region of Chittaurgarh was attacked by enemies. Keeping in mind the security of one’s life, Maharana Udai Singh II during the beginning of the 16th century when artillery warfare was a common affair and while he was in exile at Kumbhalgarh decided to develop a more secure city like Udaipur. The region in which Ayad, the previous capital of the Kingdom was situated was prone to flooding. Therefore, a ridge which was located in the eastwards direction of Lake Pichola was chosen by him as a place for the new capital city, his decision was believed to be influenced by the advice of a hermit whom he had encountered at the time when he was hunting at the foothills of Aravalli Range. There is a belief that the king was blessed by the hermit and was guided to build a palace at the place and assured him of his security and protection. In consequence of the advice, a place for the residence was established at the site. In November 1567, the Mughal Emperor Akbar encircled the respected fort of Chittor. With a view of protecting Udaipur from the attacks of the enemy, a six-kilometer long city wall comprising of seven gates which were named as following, Surajpole, Chandpole, Udiapole, Hathipole, Ambapole, Brahmpole, and others were built by Maharana Udai Singh II.

Presently, the area which is located within these gates and walls is known as the old city or the walled city.

When the Mughal Empire started losing their hold over the Kingdom of Mewar, it was the rulers of the Sisodia community who became successful in regaining independence and recapturing most of Mewar except for the region of Chittor. Since the time being Udaipur has remained the capital of the state and in the year 1818, it was declared as the princely state of British India. The surroundings of the region in which Udaipur is situated comprised of mountainous areas which proved to be a roadblock in the movement of Mughal horses which used to be heavily armored. This was the reason for the safety of Udaipur irrespective of the amount of pressure it received from Mughals. Currently, the custodian of the Mewar Dynasty is Maharana Mahendra Singh Mewar who is 76th in number.
