Jagdish Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is believed to be the preserver of Universe. This magnificent temple is situated in the City Palace Complex of the city. The temples are considered to be the most significant and important temple in the city of Udaipur. History

Jagdish Temple was built 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh, the unique feature of the location of the temple is that several lanes taking off from many of the shehar panah (city walls) finally ends up at the temple complex. This holy temple is a marvellous example of either Maha Maru or the Maru Gujara Architecture, the walls of the shrine are decorated by beautiful and ornate carvings.  The temple is located at walking distance from the Magnificent City Palace located in the City of Lakes. The main sanctum of the temple premises comprises of an idol of the deity Lord Jagannath, in local parlance of deities like Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna. The idols have been carved out of a single black stone, with brilliantly shinning four arms and the presence of flowers and finery adds more beauty to its charm. The temple complex also consists of four smaller shrines which have been dedicated to holy figures including Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Lord Surya and Goddess Shakti. All these four shrines encircle the place where main shrine is situated. The main complex of holy shrine houses the idol of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that a -total amount of around Rs 1.5 Million (15,00,000) was spent on the construction of this beautiful and splendid temple in 1651, which used to be a large amount during those times.

Architectural Efficacy

The structure of the temple is raised on a tall terrace. A double-storey Mandapa (Hall) is attached to a double-storey saandhara (with a covered ambulatory) sanctum in the temple premises. Another story has been included within the mandapa’s pyramidal samavarna (bellroof) while there exist two more non-functional storeys in the the hollow clustered spire which is situated over the sanctum. There exists a total of 32 steps made of marble which must be climbed to reach the main place of holy shrine. The steps are intercepted by a Brass image of Garuda in the end, who is believed to be the mount (vahana) of Lord Vishnu. This serene and peaceful Jagdish temple is the perfect and most beautiful example of Hindu Iconography. The temple building comprises of three stories of hand carved stone, the steeple of the temple being 79 feet in height. Thus, making it the largest temple to be situated in the City of Udaipur.

The best time to visit Jagdish Temple is in winters that is during the months of November to February. The summers in the city like Udaipur is really hot which proves to be a roadblock in the tour.
