HISTORY OF EKLINGJI

The temple has an adventurous as well as heartwarming ancient history. the temple was built by Bappa Rawal in the 8th century. since that time the temple has been ruled and taken care of by the Mewar rulers. According to the 15th century Eklinga Mahatmaya, the original idol of shiva and the temple were destroyed during invasions by the Delhi sultanate rulers.
In the 15th century, the temple was rebuilt in addition to constructing a Vishnu temple. then in the late 15th century Malwa sultanate attacked Mewar and devastated Eklingji. Then Raja Raimal captured defeated the malwa’s and captured the person who destroyed and demanded a ransom for his release with which Rajmal patronized the last major rebuilding of the complex, and installed the present murti at the main temple.in the 16th century, the temple came under the control of Ramanandis.
THE EKLINGJI TEMPLE IS ONE OF A KIND- the entrance to the hall is adorned by a silver idol of Nandi. when looked inside the shrine one can see the two idols of Nandi each made of black stone and in brass. The air inside the temple is refreshing and a mesmerizing aroma surrounds the temple. Inside the temple is located a four-faced idol of Eklingji (Lord Shiva) which is carved out in black marble. the height of the idol is 50 feet tall. the four faces of the idol beautifully represent Lord Shiva in his four forms.
The north, east, west and south-facing parts are respectively recognized as Lord Surya, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. The apex of this outstanding idol is called as “Yantra”. It gathers the major attention of the people as it depicts the ultimate reality of this life.
The shrine also shows off heavy silver doors imprinted with the everlasting images of Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikey who were the sons of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The two water tanks are located in the northern part of the complex by the names of Karz Kund and Tulsi Kund from which the water is used for the services of the lord.
